Spray Roses: Beautiful, Delicate… and Short-Lived

At Gloss Florist, we work with many different blooms every day — and one of the most loved (and most misunderstood) flowers is the spray rose.
Spray roses are incredibly charming. With multiple small blooms on each stem, they create softness, volume, and that romantic “garden style” look so many of our clients adore. They’re elegant, feminine, and perfect for hatbox arrangements, bouquets, and modern floral designs.
But here’s the honest truth from our professional experience:
Spray Roses Do Not Last Long
Unlike standard roses, spray roses are much more delicate. In our daily practice at Gloss Florist, we’ve noticed that spray roses tend to dry out and wilt faster than many other flowers.
Even if you:
Cut the stems every day
Change the water daily
Use flower food
Keep the vase clean
They still typically do not have a long vase life.
This isn’t about poor quality. It’s simply the nature of the flower. Spray roses are sensitive and fragile. They are grown for beauty and visual impact — not durability.
The One Thing That Actually Helps
There is one method that truly makes a difference:
Keep Them Cold
Spray roses last longer in cool temperatures.
The ideal temperature range is:
2°C to 15°C (35°F to 59°F)
What does this mean in real life?
Place them in the refrigerator overnight
Keep them on a cool balcony
Store them in a cold room
Even outside (if weather allows and it’s within that temperature range)
Cool temperatures significantly slow down the aging process. Warm rooms will make them open and wilt much faster.
Why We Still Love Spray Roses
Despite their short lifespan, spray roses are incredibly beautiful. They bring:
Romantic texture
Soft elegance
A luxurious garden feel
A premium look to any arrangement
Many people love them — and we do too. Their delicate clusters create an impression that few flowers can replicate.
But it’s important to understand:
Spray roses are flowers for the moment.
They are about impression, emotion, and beauty — not longevity.
Final Thoughts
If you choose spray roses, choose them for their charm and aesthetic impact. Enjoy them fully while they’re fresh, keep them cool, and understand that their beauty is naturally short-lived.
Sometimes the most beautiful things aren’t meant to last long — and that’s exactly what makes them special. 🌸
